1. The Goddess Who Loved Flowers
Long ago, in the land of the Olympian gods, the earth goddess Demeter lived happily with her beloved daughter, Persephone. Persephone loved wandering through the fields, picking flowers. Wherever she walked, beautiful blossoms bloomed in her wake.
One day, she was playing with her friends in a meadow full of narcissus flowers. Suddenly, the ground beneath her feet split apart with a loud roar, and a dark wind swept across the field!

2. Taken to the Underworld
From the gaping chasm in the earth, a black chariot emerged, pulled by shadowy horses! It was Hades, the god of the underworld. Without hesitation, he seized Persephone and carried her away.
She screamed for her mother, but her voice never reached the surface. The earth closed up behind them, leaving the meadow as if nothing had happened.

3. Demeter’s Grief
Realizing that her daughter was gone, Demeter fell into deep sorrow. She wandered the world, searching for Persephone everywhere, but found no trace of her.
In her grief, Demeter cursed the land. The once-fertile earth became barren, crops withered, and rivers dried up. Trees shed their leaves, and humanity began to starve. People prayed desperately to the gods for help.

4. Zeus Intervenes and the Bargain is Made
As the world suffered, Zeus, the king of the gods, was forced to act. He summoned the gods and ordered Hades to return Persephone.
However, Persephone had already eaten pomegranate seeds in the underworld. Those who eat the food of the dead must remain there forever.
To resolve the crisis, the gods reached a compromise: Persephone would spend half of the year with Demeter in the world above and the other half in the underworld with Hades.

5. The Birth of the Seasons
When Persephone returned to the world, Demeter’s joy revived the earth. Flowers bloomed, trees turned green, and the land became fertile again.
But when Persephone had to return to the underworld, Demeter mourned once more, and the earth grew cold and barren. Thus, the cycle of the seasons was born.
From then on, people believed that spring and summer came when Persephone was with Demeter, and autumn and winter arrived when she returned to Hades.

This myth not only explains the cycle of the seasons but also symbolizes motherly love, sacrifice, and the balance between life and death.
